Layer 2 networks, often known as L2 networks, consider the physical addresses for all devices which are linked to them. This is known as a media access control address also known as a MAC address. Switches only care about an MAC address, and they do not care about IP addresses. This network is not able to perform shifting, rather it redirects data packets from ports of origin to ports of destination. This kind of network needs an external router layer for inter-VLAN communications.
Layer 3 networks, also called L3 networks feature the same capabilities as L2 networks. As opposed to an L2 network however, an L3 network has both an address table for MAC addresses and an IP routing table, which allows it to perform dynamic routing, static routing, as well as packet routing across different VLANs.
